About us

The RNLI’s People department are looking for volunteers to support the resolution of issues by promoting better volunteering relationships within the RNLI and reducing the need for more formal action to be taken to resolve disputes, thus enabling people to focus on their roles and contribute to saving lives. 

If you are trained and experienced in workplace mediation with the ability to enable volunteers to understand each other’s point of view to find common ground and areas of potential agreement, then this could be a rewarding and impactful opportunity for you. 

It’s expected you may be called upon up to three to four times per year. Each occasion requiring up to days activity during daytime and/or evening hours, when our volunteers are available. Some travel to locations will be necessary. 

The impact you will make 

You will help us save lives by promoting better volunteering relationships within the RNLI and reducing the need for more formal action to be taken to resolve disputes, thus enabling people to focus on their roles and contribute to saving lives. 

What you will be doing 

  • Coaching all those involved before and after mediation, fully explaining the process and benefits.
  • Applying a non-judgmental approach to issues raised and create a safe environment.
  • Being an information gatherer, enabling both parties to understand each other’s point of view to find common ground and areas of potential agreement.
  • Facilitating both parties to overcome their differences and find a way of volunteering together.
  • Remaining neutral and channelling frustrations from either party in to positive action.
  • Being a reality tester for the parties involved; helping them take a realistic view of the dispute and what they are hoping for as an agreement.
  • Keeping up to date with personal development and required learning for the role. 

What you need for this role 

  • Relevant training and experience in workplace mediation.
  • Experience of dealing with conflict situations including confidential and sensitive information.
  • Enjoys negotiation, problem solving and helping others.
  • Ability to travel to RNLI and other locations to mediate.
