About us

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. We provide, on call, a 24 hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the UK and Ireland, and a seasonal lifeguard service. With our lifeboats, lifeguards, safety messages and flood rescue we are committed to saving more lives.

Torbay Lifeboat Station is looking for a volunteer to join the existing team in the role of deputy lifeboat press officer.

Torbay RNLI’s crew have been saving lives in the waters in and around Torbay and out into the English Channel in all weathers for over 150 years. The station operates in busy waters that include the shipping lanes of the English Channel, the commercial fishing port of Brixham, five large marinas and two yacht clubs. Inshore waters are attractive for the widest range of water sports including wake boarding, kayaking, paddle boarding, open water swimming and diving.

The station operates a Severn class all-weather lifeboat Alec and Christina Dykes and an inshore D class lifeboat and Leslie & Mary Daws and is one of the busiest in the south west region.

The majority of the lifeboat crew are volunteers, headed up by the lifeboat operations manager and deputy launching authorities and supported by a shore crew team. The wider team includes volunteer fundraisers, shop volunteers and youth education presenters.

The deputy lifeboat press officer role involves working alongside the lifeboat press officer building and maintaining friendly relationships with local press, radio, television and online media. You’ll be involved in keeping the community informed of operational activity, promote newsworthy rescues and lifeboat station events, using a variety of channels, such as email, phone, or social media, using photos and video where possible.

This is a good opportunity to join a motivated and enthusiastic local team and have the satisfaction of contributing to saving lives at sea. If you have good communication, writing and IT skills this could be the role for you. The successful applicant will receive thorough training, including press release writing, uploading content to the RNLI news website and video editing.

Please apply online or for further information contact the RNLI’s Volunteering Team on 01202 663346 or by email on [email protected]
